Chapter 14: Calculation Of Volume And Weight For Bulk Quantity

To understand the calculator properly we should understand volume weight, gross weight, and chargeable weight.

Actual Weight

Actual weight is calculated by adding the weight of socks, accessories, and export cartons.

Volume Weight

It is also called volumetric weight and dimensions weight. It is calculated from the volume of the cargo according to a calculation formula.
By sea: Length * Width * Height in cm of cartons / 6000;
e.g.: carton size 60cm*40cm*30, the volume weight is: 60*40*30/5000 = 12kgs;
By air & courier: Length * Width * Height in cm of cartons / 5000.
e.g.: carton size 60cm*40cm*30, the volume weight is: 60*40*30/5000 = 14.4kgs;

Chargeable Weight

Chargeable weight (C.W) is used to calculate the cost of freight or other miscellaneous charges. Chargeable weight may be actual weight or volume weight.
Chargeable weight = the actual weight VS the volume weight. A larger weight is used to calculate shipping costs.

Weight Calculation For Air Freight

For regular shaped air freight shipment: Length (cm) x width (cm) x height (cm) ÷ 5000 = volumetric weight (KG), ie 1 CBM ≈ 200 KG.
For irregular shaped air freight shipment: The longest (cm) x widest (cm) x highest (cm) ÷ 6000 = volumetric weight (KG), i.e. 1 CBM ≈ 166.666667 KG.
Let's explain with a short example:
Shipment measurement:
➔Length (l) = 80cm
➔Width (w) = 20cm
➔Height (h) = 45cm
➔Gross Weight = 5Kgs
Step 1; Calculate the volume weight of the air freight shipment
Volume weight= length X width X height
= 80cm x 20cmx 45cm
= 11.4Kg
Step 2; Compare the gross weight with the volumetric weight
volumetric weight vs gross weight = 11.4 kgs vs 9.5kgs
Chargeable weight is the greater value which is 11.4 kgs.

Sea shipping calculation method:

Shipping by sea is much simpler than air transportation. In China heavy and light goods are divided on the basis of a standard of 1 cubic meter equal to 1 ton. In the LCL sea freight, heavy goods are rare, mainly light goods, and shipping LCL is calculated according to the volume of freight. You may be involved in shipping from china for a long time but you may not be aware of heavy and light objects because they are not used basically.

According to the stowage of the ship, any cargo with a cargo stowage factor less than the ship’s capacity factor is called Heavy Weight Cargo; any cargo with a cargo stowage factor greater than the ship’s tank capacity is called Measurement Cargo/Light Goods.
Cargo with a stowage factor of less than 1.1328 m3/ton or 40 cubic feet/ton will be as called heavy cargo; where the cargo stowage factor is greater than 1.1328 m3/ton or 40 Cubic feet per ton of cargo, is called light goods/foam goods.
The main concept of heavy goods and light goods is mainly related to storage, transportation, storage, and billing. The freight forwarder company distinguishes heavy goods from foam goods according to their own certain standards.
There are two main points that we should keep in mind related to air freight and sea freight:
1. Always pack cartons in regular and good shape. Any kind of deformation can cause a higher volume weight.
2. To be on the safe side, we can calculate the length, width, and height of cargo 2cm bigger than the actual length, width, and height. So we don’t lose money when getting the final bill from the carrier.
